Jaime Miller is one of Kerr Construction & Design's Senior Designers. She has been in the home and commercial construction game for 12 years now and spent that last two at Kerr.
A graduate of the Architectural Technology & Build program at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, Jaime has designed a number of multi-million dollar projects during her career. For Kerr, she has been involved in the design and/or redesign of some 30 homes.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
Jaime is well suited for planning homes in the environmentally sensitive Lower Mainland because she is also a graduate of the LEED Certification Green Building course. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED) is a rating system that is recognized as the international mark of excellence for green building in over 160 countries.
"Most homeowners that I have worked with on redesigning their homes have usually done an abundance of research on what they want before we sit down for the first time," says Jaime.
"However, despite this and perhaps because of this, they usually have two major misconceptions about their project that we have to clear up.
"These are their budget and time."
Many homeowner dreams of a kitchen, bathroom or full home makeovers are whetted by the reality shows of HGTV. Those half-hour shows whether it be the popular "Property Brothers," the US juggernaut "Fixer Upper" or one of the others can leave viewers with the idea that home renovation projects mostly run smoothly, only take a few weeks and can be done for a relatively modest budget.
On these shows, you never hear talk about waiting for building permits or city inspections or any real problem which might cost a lot more or hold things up.
Reality is different than reality TV
Jaime finds she has to point out the real reality of renovations to her clients.
"The ugly truth of the matter is the real cost of giving someone the renovations they want can be double what they had expected. Also, it will take three months to complete, not those six to eight weeks that is sort of the norm for HGTV television projects."
Kerr System is on time and on budget
All is not dark, however. Jaime also tells them about the Kerr System, a methodical, professional planning process which takes clients seamlessly through all stages of their home renovation, gets them the biggest bang for their renovation dollar and an achievable timeline for their project. The Kerr System is the result of Kerr Construction & Design's 30 years of experience in custom home building and renovation.
Clients end up saying things like, "Kerr Construction completed our major renovation which included removing load-bearing walls and installing engineered beams, as well as completely replacing both bathrooms and the kitchen...the design team gave us exactly what we wanted, and the work was completed on time and under budget. A terrific company!"
Advice is to get a consultation ASAP
To help those homeowners starting on their renovation dreams, Jaime's advice is to get a professional design consultation early in their renovation planning, especially with a large renovation project.
"I think it is important for people to know as early as possible the ins and outs of what they are planning. They need to have a solid foundation on which to build their dream home.
"A design consultation does this. It doesn't even have to be with us.
"But it is a service that we provide because we want homeowners to get the most out of their renovation dollar and have realistic expectations," says Jaime.
Kerr even has an ebook about getting the most out of your renovation dollar called "Six Tips To Get the Most Out of Your Home Renovations Budget" You can download it here.
