Home Renovations: Four Fabulous Empty-Nester Ideas

home renovationsBefore you know it, families grow—kids move on to pursue their own independent lives and are no longer reliant on you and your household. You may even have expanded your home at some point years ago to accommodate the brood and their various activities: that huge family room for horsing around and sleepovers with friends, built-in desks in bedrooms for homework and other projects…

Now you find yourself staring at some empty space and outdated architecture. If downsizing’s not your thing and you love your lush and perfectly planted garden, why move? Look at your home through fresh eyes and capitalize on the luxury of some space to truly call your own. Well-planned home renovations could be the start of a whole new life.

Home Renovations Create the You-Space You Deserve

You may have scrimped on your own bedroom space in the past to make sure that the kids each had a room and an extra bathroom to call their own. Now that the empty nest phase has arrived, however, here’s an opportunity to you may find yourself with several spare rooms in addition to your own. How many guest bedrooms can anyone actually use, anyway, and even then it’s only on occasion.

  1. Create your Own Master SuiteWhy not remodel the entire second floor of your home to accommodate a generous master suite, complete with spacious walk-in closet space and a gorgeous en suite bathroom? A private, open concept layout to call your own, for once without sacrificing space and making do. Taking down a few walls between the now empty bedrooms and some savvy home renovations will make it happen in no time.
  2. Repurpose the Family Room – There’s a big difference between the optimum layout of a family household and one that is shared by a couple. It’s time to reclaim the family room and transform it into a classy and expansive entertainment area. Watch movies on a super screen and entertain guests for casual get-togethers. Add some tasteful furniture and adjustable lighting around the fully equipped bar and your parties will plan themselves.
  3. A Brand New Kitchen – Go for it! When your kids were still at home, the main kitchen considerations were practicality and safety. Those aspects don’t have to disappear when home renovations bring your well-worn kitchen up to date, with truly contemporary, top of the line features and fixtures.
  4. Open up an Office or Studio Space – Consider combining two smaller adjoining bedrooms into that large airy workspace you’ve always wanted. Set up your computer, scanner, printer and more on a beautiful built-in desk. Add some overstuffed armchairs for reading under the new skylight, also great for dabbling in artwork when you take those long overdue watercolour classes. Include a top-of-the-line (read: comfortable) sofa bed and when needed, there’s your guest bedroom!

When the kids move out, there’s no need to feel awkward in that so-called empty nest. Some creative and practical home renovations will customize any space to make it ideal for your current needs.
