Latest Proposed Changes for Vancouver Laneway Homes

Laneway home beside residentialIn the interest of keeping up to date with the latest possibilities on the Vancouver laneway housing scene, it’s important to note, especially if you’re considering having one constructed on your property, that some changes to the regulations have recently been proposed. Supporters of laneway homes are optimistic.

The potential changes aim to both:

  • fast-track processes of approval for one-story coach houses
  • expand zoning to allow them in all single-family residential zones.

The city estimates that through the suggested changes in zoning, another approximately 2,800 lots would be made available for the development of laneway homes, and that since the recommended new regulations would allow for the building of 644-square-foot houses on 33-foot lots, the resulting home would be made even “more liveable.”

Laneway Homes Bring Multiple Advantages

Ultimately, the City of Vancouver’s admirable aim is to give rise to more sustainable, single-family, residential communities, in turn providing more reasonably priced housing for renters of all ages. Available housing in such communities can provide opportunities and be a real benefit to those who wish to live nearer schools, transportation and other amenities.

Whether you plan to rent your laneway home on a short- or long-term basis for an additional source of income, or use it instead as a great self-contained, private living space for extended family or guests, remember that it is also a feature that can only add considerably to your overall property value.

Custom Home Builders Guide Homeowners through the Laneway House Plan Process

Laneway House plansHaving your Vancouver laneway home designed and built from scratch by a qualified and innovative custom home builder means that the end result will be an attractive and unique structure, not the hasty product of a cookie cutter blueprint. When conceived by skilled experts, a new laneway home won’t stand out like an eyesore; it will enhance, not detract, from the look and style of the existing house and yard area.

Significantly, in the face of any potentially shifting municipal regulations governing the creation of this relatively new category of homes, having professionals on board from start to finish means not having to locate and interpret the most current rules and face the morass of city hall application for approval processes yourself. Custom home builders will handle the requirement details while you reap the benefits. Let the experts take charge!
